Three new fields in Zangle's Student Editor
San Diego City Schools began to participate in the California School Information Services (CSIS) Program in 2004-05 by assigning Statewide Student Identifiers (SSIDs) to over 100,000 students enrolled in the district at the time. The assignment of SSIDs, or CSIS IDs, to enrolled students is an ongoing task that the district is involved in. The establishment of SSIDs for all students in the state of California is needed in order to ensure student records are transferred in a more efficient and timely manner and to allow for better data in educational practice and policy.
The district needs your help to find out where each student attended school before coming to our district. Three new fields have been added to Zangle to help the district assign CSIS IDs to new students. These fields, located on the SDCS-CSIS tab in Student Editor, need to be completed when enrolling a student who is new to the district.
- Previous CSIS ID: Enter the student's CSIS ID, if you know what it is. Transcripts or report cards from other districts may include this information. You can also ask the parents or the previous school if they have this information.
- Previous School: Enter the name of the school from which the student is transferring. This information will only be needed if the student is transferring from another district within California.
- Previous District: Enter the name of the district from which the student is transferring. This information will only be needed if the student is transferring from another district within California.
A job aid providing instructions for entering data in these new fields as you enroll new students is available for download on the
Zangle Job Aids page.
Eventually, every student in California will have a CSIS ID. For more questions about why students need a CSIS ID, please visit the San Diego City Schools CSIS website at

San Diego City Schools and the CSIS Project
San Diego City Schools has taken the first steps towards participating in the CSIS State Reporting and Records Transfer project. The district has returned the contract to CSIS and is waiting for funding for the first deliverable met. Currently the district is working on a project schedule, budget and gap analysis. A group of district staff has been chosen for the project implementation and will be working to implement this program over the next few years.
